ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS:
Joakim Berlin currently works as the head of the Special Detection Dogs Unit (Region Mitt) at the Swedish Police. He is also an Assessor, Instructor and Mental evaluator for Swedish police K9 Units. He is a previous Global EDD advisor at UNOPS and was responsible for developing and implementing UNOPS EDD Quality standards. He has also worked as an EDD assessor for UNOPS.
Joakim also worked as a Frontex Assessor and Course Manager for Frontex PSD Instructor courses.
Karita Häkkinen is a scent detection instructor from Finland. She has worked as a special detection dog and tracking dog handler and instructor for over a decade. She was the pioneer in the Bed Bug Detection Dog industry in Finland and led the way for all the BBDD teams there are working in Finland today.
Karita’s main job nowadays is to coach dog teams that already are or aim to become professional in detection work.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE COURSE?
This intensive course contains three long (3-days) weekends filled with theory and training by two very talented and experienced instructors. The course takes place in different locations in Estonia, but also online tutoring between the meetings is provided. Participants will learn strong basics and important factors to take their training forward with modern and efficient techniques according to
UN and EU standards. Practical training exercises will be customized to meet the level of every dog team. The Working language is English.
1st weekend: Learning Theory and indication training Dates: May 28.-30.

2nd weekend: Scent Imprinting and Line-ups Dates: July 09.-11.
Place: Saaremaa
3rd weekend: Operational scenarios Dates: Sept 10-12
Place: to be confirmed in Southern-Estonia
THE COST OF THE COURSE
930€ per dog training team 480€ for auditors
The cost for the course includes coaching on the training weekends, coffee breaks during the day, materials, online coaching between the meetings.
The cost does not include lunches, dinner, or accommodation.
WHO IS THIS COURSE INTENDED FOR?
- those who are already working with detection dogs but want to develop their skills as a handler and a dog team
- those who aim to become a professional detection dog team
- both civilians and authorities are welcome
WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE COURSE?
- an easily motivated dog to work with
- basic knowledge of reward-based training on dogs
- high motivation to learn and train
- sufficient amount of time available for attending all the training meetings
- if tutoring needed between the meetings, then the possibility to record videos of your training and uploading them for online tutoring (phone quality is sufficient)
